Matter is Plastic in the Face of Mind

Found relics and discarded ordinary objects make up the principal materials for Sofia Hultén’s sculptural and performative practices, for instance, fragments of a van, old jeans and industrial lifting slings in her current exhibition at RaebervonStenglin. By including them in activities such as destructing, re-arranging or leading the initial purpose of everyday objects ad absurdum, narrative potentials emerge.
At Le Foyer, Sofia Hultén and James Langdon will discuss approaches to the layering of reality in, around and in-between their practice. Taking the quote "Matter is Plastic in the Face of Mind" from science fiction author Philip K. Dick as a starting point, Hultén developed a performative setting involving a marker pen, jeans, a notebook and a chocolate bar, which was presented during Langdon’s course School for Design Fiction at GfZK Leipzig. Using the genre of design fiction to assert storytelling as the primary function of design, the research project includes topics such as physically permeable time, objects from parallel realities and multiverse theories.

Tulipmania

Konzeptuelle Fragestellungen koppelt Pascal Schwaighofer oft mit eigentümlichen handwerklichen Verfahren und eignet sich dafür althergebrachte Techniken an. Für das mehrteilige Projekt Economimesis, das er 2013 in der Galerie Barbara Seiler ausstellte, näherte er sich über die traditionelle türkische Maltechnik Ebru thematisch und motivisch der Tulpenmanie in den Niederlanden im 17. Jahrhundert an. Die Auswüchse dieser ersten gut dokumentierten Spekulationsblase der Wirtschaftsgeschichte sowie spekulative Dynamiken im zeitgenössischen Kunstsystem stellt er zusammen mit Jan Verwoert bei Le Foyer zur Diskussion.

Who writes makes no art

By using flexible materials such as dyed cloth, thread, paper or wood, Reto Pulfer creates cave- and tent-like structures, which function as spaces for perception and experience. They deal with states and conditions as moments of transition and movement. The artist is currently finishing his first novel. Together with John Beeson, he will discuss the relationship and interdependencies between writing and art-making – because: „Writing means not making art, but in the same way to find more precise articulations than by making art.”

natural abstraction 

The conceptual implications of material processes are paramount to Vanessa Billy's practice. Extraction of raw materials to energy consumption and the immutable waste products that result from it, the horror or the beauty of these chain reactions we do not all control exert a strong fascination for her. In comparison to that Ben Woodard’s thinking focuses among other things on speculative realism and its impact on our understanding of (physical) science or nature. Within the talk the artist and the philosopher not only discuss the differences between empirical evidence and speculation but also the natural status of the image between art and philosophy.

Die Schriftstellerin Sissi Tax und der Künstler Matthias Sohr stellen den Versuch an, dem Begriff der Praxis und dem, was sich dem Begriff entzieht, auf die Schliche zu kommen. Mittels ihres jeweiligen Wortschatzes und Bildschatzes. Matthias Sohr zeigt Gegenstände. Sissi Tax hat Bücher geschrieben, aber liest auch laut. Sie trafen sich in Berlin, mit Ähnlichkeitsverhältnissen haben sie nichts am Hut, und Federn lassen sie. Vernakuläres ist ihnen lieb.
